SpaceX has reduced access to its Grok Bot AI agent after some subscribers reported unexpectedly reaching their weekly usage limits over the Halloween weekend. CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the complaints on November 1, 2026, explaining that operating the service had become too expensive relative to the revenue it generates.
Several users reported that their usage indicators had suddenly reached 100%, despite little or no activity overnight. Some said their recorded usage had increased from approximately 50% to the maximum allowance, leaving them unable to access the service before their scheduled reset dates.
In a response posted on X, Musk stated that the cost of serving Grok Bot was “unsustainably high relative to revenue.” However, he did not disclose the service’s operating expenses or explain how subscription allowances had been adjusted.
Subscribers Report Unexpected Usage Restrictions
Users began reporting the changes over the weekend, with some questioning why their allowances had been exhausted without corresponding activity. One user reported that their usage had increased from 50% to 100%, while others experienced similar restrictions.
Musk’s explanation indicated that operating costs were influencing the company’s approach to usage limits. However, SpaceX has not provided a detailed statement explaining how the limits are calculated or how existing subscribers will be affected.
Grok Bot is an AI agent designed to perform tasks on behalf of users, rather than simply respond to text prompts. Musk has continued promoting its capabilities, including its ability to assist with purchasing gifts for family members.
SpaceX Reports Profit From AI Operations
The restrictions follow recent financial disclosures showing the growing contribution of artificial intelligence to SpaceX. According to an October 2026 company filing, AI operations accounted for 52% of its income.
SpaceX’s renamed Super Intelligence division reported a profit of $431 million, despite incurring $1.2 billion in one-time costs associated with its acquisition of AI coding company Cursor. The acquisition was completed in August 2026.
Musk had previously described Grok Bot as the fastest-growing product he had encountered, citing rapid adoption of the AI agent. The latest restrictions come shortly after those remarks, although SpaceX has not disclosed how much Grok Bot itself contributes to the division’s revenue or profit.
As of November 2, Musk had not announced revised weekly usage allowances, provided a timetable for further changes, or clarified if affected subscribers would receive additional usage credits.
