Cloud development platform Railway has urged all customers to revoke and replace their API keys, passwords, and other stored credentials after detecting a cyberattack that may have exposed sensitive customer information. The company disclosed the incident on October 21, 2026, saying hackers may have accessed encrypted environment variables and obtained the decrypted contents of some records.
Railway said its preliminary investigation suggests the breach affected a subset of users, although it has not determined the full extent of the exposure. The company temporarily suspended new application builds and deployments while investigating the incident, with services subsequently being restored in stages.
Railway Warns of Potential Exposure of Customer Credentials
According to Railway’s official security disclosure, the company detected unusual activity involving systems responsible for storing customer environment variables. These variables can contain passwords, API keys, database credentials, and other information that applications use to connect to external services.
Although the information was stored in encrypted form, Railway said the attackers may have obtained readable contents for some variables. Compromised credentials could allow unauthorized access to connected databases, cloud infrastructure, or third-party accounts.
Railway advised every customer to rotate credentials stored on its platform, including API keys and private registry credentials. It also recommended reviewing service logs for suspicious activity, regardless of whether customers have received confirmation that their accounts were affected.
The company said it would contact affected customers directly as its investigation identifies compromised accounts. Railway founder and CEO Jake Cooper also told TechCrunch that a detailed post-incident report would be published.
Attack May Be Linked to Campaign Targeting AI Providers
Railway believes the incident could be connected to a series of attacks targeting technology platforms to obtain credentials belonging to AI inference providers. Such credentials can grant access to paid AI services, potentially allowing attackers to use computing resources or generate unauthorized charges.
The incident follows a separate security breach involving open-source AI coding tool OpenCode, which reported that attackers obtained API keys and other credentials belonging to over 1% of its customers. OpenCode attributed its incident to an AI distillation attack involving automated attempts to extract information from AI systems.
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has also warned about campaigns targeting American companies to obtain AI-related technology and information. However, Railway has not identified its attackers or established a confirmed connection to any particular group.
Railway Investigates Scope as Services Resume
Railway temporarily restricted builds and deployments during its investigation, preventing developers from releasing updated versions of their applications. The company subsequently began restoring services while continuing to review affected systems and customer credentials.
The platform has not disclosed how the attackers gained access, how many customers were affected, or whether any ransom demands were made. Railway has directed users to its service status page for updates on restoration and further security information.
The breach occurred during the same week that researchers disclosed critical vulnerabilities in PHP, including flaws collectively referred to as PHP2Shell. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence linking Railway’s security incident to those vulnerabilities.
