SpaceX Restores Ukraine’s Starshield Access After 10-Day Disruption

SpaceX’s military-grade Starshield satellite internet service has reportedly returned to normal operation in Ukraine after approximately 10 days of speed restrictions that disrupted Ukrainian drone missions. Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevheniy Khmara confirmed on October 24 that connectivity had been restored, although the military continued testing the system and had not received an explanation for the restrictions.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Ukrainian military monitoring systems recorded stable connections on equipment traveling faster than 400 kilometers per hour (249 mph). The restrictions, introduced around October 14, had previously caused drones to lose connectivity at speeds of approximately 160 kilometers per hour (100 mph).

Speed Restrictions Disrupted Ukrainian Drone Operations

The connectivity problems affected Ukraine’s ability to conduct drone strikes and intercept incoming Russian attack drones. Some Ukrainian forces lost control of their drones when satellite connections dropped, while others had to operate at reduced speeds, making them more vulnerable during missions.

Starshield is a government-focused satellite communications system developed by SpaceX using technology from its commercial Starlink network. The service provides secure communications and specialized capabilities for government and military operations, while Starlink primarily serves civilian and commercial customers.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the restoration on October 24, saying connectivity had returned to its previous operating speeds. He said the recovery began overnight and thanked American officials and other partners who helped address the disruption.

Trump Reportedly Contacted Musk Over Restrictions

The restoration followed reports that US President Donald Trump contacted SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on October 21 and requested that Starshield service be restored. Trump subsequently said Musk had restored access but declined to confirm whether he personally made the call.

The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Musk had instructed SpaceX to restrict Ukraine’s Starlink access, although some sources said he had discussed the decision with the Trump administration beforehand. Musk has separately maintained that Starshield systems are controlled by the US government and that decisions concerning their use are ultimately determined by American military authorities and the president.

Musk also accused Ukraine of violating Starlink’s terms of service by using its commercial network for offensive drone strikes. Ukrainian officials disputed the allegation, saying existing technical restrictions already prevented the military from using commercial Starlink services in the manner Musk described.

Musk further claimed that Ukraine’s front lines would collapse immediately if Starlink service were completely disabled, while emphasizing that his statement was not a threat. Neither SpaceX nor the US government has publicly provided Ukraine with a detailed explanation for the Starshield restrictions that affected its military operations.
