Reddit Tests Search Ads as Traffic Declines and User Growth Slows

Reddit has begun testing advertisements within its search results pages, allowing brands to reach users searching for products, recommendations, and other information on the platform. The announcement, made on November 3, 2026, follows the company’s warning about declining search traffic, slowing user growth, and a fourth-quarter revenue forecast that fell below analysts’ expectations.

According to Reddit’s official announcement, the initial test involves a selected group of eligible advertisers. The company will evaluate how users respond to sponsored search results before deciding how to develop the advertising format.

Reddit Introduces Contextual Advertising in Search Results

The new placements allow advertisers to display promotions based on the context of a user’s search query. For example, someone searching for “espresso station” might encounter advertisements for coffee machines, mugs, or coffee products.

Similarly, searches for “home office setup” could display advertisements for monitors, desks, and office chairs. Reddit said contextual relevance would be among the factors determining which advertisements appear.

The company has not disclosed how many users will encounter the ads or when the feature might become widely available. The testing period will help Reddit assess user engagement and refine the advertising experience.

Declining Search Traffic Raises Revenue Concerns

The announcement follows Reddit’s third-quarter financial results, which exceeded analysts’ expectations for revenue and earnings per share. However, its shares declined after the company projected fourth-quarter revenue of $1 billion to $1.03 billion, below Wall Street’s estimate of $1.05 billion.

Reddit attributed part of its traffic challenges to changes in Google Search, particularly the introduction of AI-powered features that provide answers directly within search results. These features can reduce the number of users clicking through to external websites.

Global daily active users remained largely unchanged from the previous quarter at 130.3 million. In the United States, daily active users declined from 53.2 million in the second quarter to 50.7 million in the third quarter, representing a 2% year-over-year decrease.

The company also warned that continued traffic declines could result in a low-double-digit percentage decrease in daily active users by the fourth quarter.

Reddit Plans Gradual Shift to Logged-In Access

Reddit separately announced plans to gradually require users to log in to access its platform, beginning with markets outside the United States. The transition is intended to limit unauthorized AI scraping while providing additional information that could support advertising.

Registered users generate signals about their interests and platform activity, allowing advertisers to target audiences using additional behavioral information. The planned login requirements and new search advertisements form part of Reddit’s efforts to generate revenue from users already accessing its platform.
