My Specialty Dentist and Orofacial Therapeutics Partner to Help Jaw and Facial Pain Patients Access Care

My Specialty Dentist (MSD), the dental education platform and provider directory, and Orofacial Therapeutics, Inc. (OFT), the San Diego-based company focused on head, neck, and jaw pain solutions, today announced a partnership to benefit patients seeking care for more than 30 types of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and orofacial pain.

Two clinical ideas have guided OFT since its founding: treat jaw pain early and conservatively, before an acute problem becomes chronic, and identify the patients who need evaluation and treatment options from a specialist. OFT has developed protocols and educational materials that help dentists recognize when a patient needs a referral to an orofacial pain specialist.

Now, with My Specialty Dentist, patients and dentists can use a directory and guided chat that help patients work out which kind of provider treats their problem and compare providers on training and credentials.

“The field of orofacial pain is relatively new and not well known in medicine, in dentistry, or among the public. Yet close to 30 percent of searches on MSD relate to jaw pain, from common jaw pain all the way up to complex headache disorders, atypical face pain, and other orofacial pain conditions,* and MSD is structured to help a patient with a complex condition find an orofacial pain specialist,” said Dmitriy Pisarev, founder of My Specialty Dentist. “Our half of this partnership is the matching. Our search identifies providers treating these conditions and displays their training and credentials in a standardized format. When a patient asks to be contacted, MSD gives the practice the full conversation along with a summary of the patient’s need, circumstances, and relevant background, so the practice’s review starts further along instead of from a cold call to the front desk.”

“The window that matters most in jaw injury and TMD is the first few weeks,” said Dr. Brad Eli, DMD, MS, co-founder of Orofacial Therapeutics and an orofacial pain specialist with more than 30 years in practice. “Early, conservative care is how you keep an acute problem from becoming a chronic one. That care does not come from one kind of clinician. It comes from prepared providers at every level: general dentists with the right training on the front line, and orofacial pain specialists for the complex cases. This partnership helps patients reach both.”

“MSD can help patients find a general dentist who offers same-day care with a QuickSplint and follow-up, and, if needed, longer-term treatment options or a referral to a specialist. Most people with lasting jaw or facial pain wait far too long before they reach out to a provider. That is why we offer simple protocols for jaw and muscle sprain or strain, much like the protocols for an ankle sprain. We are excited to partner with MSD’s search platform, its guided chat, and its library of plain-language guides. MSD helps bridge the dental-medical gap for referring clinicians and gives TMD patients with a range of conditions and needs a way to find care,” said Ann McCulloch, MBA, co-founder of Orofacial Therapeutics.

MSD is free for patients. MSD does not provide medical or dental care or advice. Patients should talk with a qualified clinician about diagnosis and treatment. Patients with complex jaw, face, or head pain can learn more at myspecialtydentist.com.
